    • The course fee will be waived off for UDID card holder PwD students and parents or siblings of persons with disabilities.

    Diploma in Indian Sign Language Interpretation (D.I.S.L.I)


    Objectives

    The main objectives of the programme are to:

    1. Train Indian Sign Language (ISL) interpreters to provide communication access to Deaf and Hard of Hearing people in various real-life settings.

    2. Explore Deaf culture and society, and study the structure and use of Indian Sign Language (ISL).

    3. Increase understanding of the principles and ethics related to ISL interpretation in professional fields.


    Scope of the Programme

    An Indian Sign Language Interpreter is responsible for facilitating communication for deaf individuals in various settings. This may include:

    • Office meetings

    • Courtrooms

    • Political speeches

    • One-on-one interactions

    • Remote services via technology

    Key Competencies Required:

    • Strong understanding of subject matter

    • Proficiency in sign language

    • Excellent communication and listening skills

    • Good memory retention

    • Research ability, especially in technical or complex scenarios


    General Framework of the Course

    a) Duration of the Programme

    • Total Duration: 2 Academic Years (Maximum completion time: 3 years from admission)

    • Structure: 4 Semesters

    • Total Working Days: 400 days (2 years)

    • Total Hours: 2400 hours

    • Semester Structure:

      • Each semester = 100 working days = 600 hours

      • 10 additional Notional Hours days per semester (60 hours)

      • Includes 60 hours of Employability Skills (theory + practical)

    Employability Skills Module:

    • Freely available at: www.employabilityskills.net

    • Designed to build readiness skills, soft skills, and interview preparation

    • Assessment: Formative (internal) + Summative (final exam)


    b) Eligibility Criteria
    A candidate should have:

    1. Senior Secondary (10+2) or equivalent with a minimum of 50% marks

    2. Functional hands

    3. Fluency in at least one spoken language

    4. Hearing in the normal range

    Note: Reservation and relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PwD and other categories will be as per Central/State Government rules, whichever is applicable.


    c) Medium of Instruction

    • Indian Sign Language (ISL)

    • English/Hindi

    • Regional language (if the instructor is fluent)


    d) Methodology of Training
    The teaching methods will include:

    • Lectures and demonstrations

    • Project work and discussions

    • Exposure visits to schools and rehabilitation programs

    • Participation in community meetings, conferences, and seminars

    • Practice teaching and internship in grassroots-level disability intervention programs


    e) Intake Capacity

    • Maximum Intake: 30 students per academic year


    f) Minimum Attendance / Working Days

    • Attendance Requirement: Minimum 75% in both theory and practical sessions (as per RCI-NBER guidelines)

    • Working Days: Monday to Friday
